Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Monthly Discussions 2021
Sarah Fawcett and Steve Diggs, the co-chairs of SOOS' EDI group, would like to invite you to help us kick-off a reinvigorated set of monthly workshops related to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion discussions from 2020. These upcoming workshops will have limited foci with an emphasis on impactful outcomes. Activities will include but are not limited to position papers in journals with wide distribution, as well as internal recommendations on best practices specific to SOOS.
Next week (April 11,12 and 13, TZ-dependent), we will be holding two information sessions, each at a time intended to be marginally convenient depending on your timezone. We realize that they are coming up rather quickly, so they will be recorded if you can’t make it.
If you are interested in rolling up your sleeves and doing more than merely discussing EDI topics, there are two immediate actions to take:

- We need each of you to bring something to the table. For the first meeting, we would like to start a ‘reading group’ and are seeking EDI-relevant documents from your country and/or discipline. For instance, in USA, EDI/JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) discussions have centered around race and the relationship of the African diaspora to the dominant culture here. However, this is not a relevant EDI topic in countries where there is less racial diversity, and progress on EDI issues will have more relevance along different axes.
