Virtual Workshop on Ocean Connectivity & Exchange Across the Antarctic Peninsula: Processes and Impacts

The Antarctic Peninsula is a critical region of ocean exchange along the Antarctic coast, where the cold Weddell Sea and the warm Bellingshausen Sea meet. The SOOS WAPSA Regional Working Group hosted a successful 3-day virtual workshop (14–16 October 2025) bringing together researchers from across the globe to discuss “Ocean Connectivity and Exchange Across the Antarctic Peninsula: Processes and Impacts”, including physical drivers modulating the ocean circulation and along-shore exchange in the region and their potential impact on biogeochemical processes. The 2.5-hour sessions were timed to span as many time zones as possible, with invited talks followed by short lighting presentations and discussions.
With strong attendance and lively discussions, participants explored key processes shaping this rapidly changing region. Many themes echoed those raised during a recent SOOS meeting in Copenhagen, offering valuable insights that will help inform the next SOOS Science Plan.
