The Southern Ocean Observing System is an international initiative to enhance, coordinate and expand the strategic observations of the Southern Oceans that are required to address key scientific and societal challenges.
Selected for their scientific excellence and standing, the SOOS international Scientific Steering Committee provides the SOOS with scientific direction and leadership.
This document outlines the scientific rational and strategy for the SOOS, identifies the variables to be observed, and presents a draft plan for an integrated multi-disciplinary observing system for the Southern Ocean.
