The Ocean Observatories Initiative, which collects and shares data from more than 800 sophisticated instruments and a transmission network across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is now operating . Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the Consortium of Ocean Leadership (COL) the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is collecting, processing and sharing vast amounts of data on the oceans.
The system is operated and managed by a consortium of Oceanographic Institutions that includes Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the University of Washington, Oregon State University and Rutgers University. Of specific interest to SOOS is the large mooring network deployed at 55 degrees south. The array of several moorings and gliders provides a wealth of data that is open to the international community. For more information and gateways to the data go to http://oceanobservatories.org/.
